Birds of Sierra Nevada: The Art, Inspiration & Science of Illustrating Birds

Friday, April 27, 2017
Brews & Bites 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm
Keynote & Wrap Up 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
Dance Palace Community and Cultural Center | Point Reyes Station, CA
Tickets $60

After a day of birding in the field, come join us for an afternoon of mingling with our bird guides, enthusiasts, and keynote speaker, Keith Hansen.

We will kick off our evening enjoying good company, local brews (and wine), and noshing on appetizer bites on the lawn. As the sun sets, we will gather in the community center, where Keith will share his latest and largest accomplishment, illustrating a 448-page book entitled, Birds of the Sierra Nevada: Their Natural History, Status and Distribution, authored by Ted Beedy and Ed Pandolfino.

With over 250+ illustrations in the book, Keith will take us on a visual walk through the Sierra Nevada and share with you some of his techniques and inspirations that have guided him along a path to being a full-time bird illustrator. Whether it’s the power of Yosemite Falls and the dippers that call it home or a water strider gliding across a still pond, inspiration comes to Keith in many forms. Come for a journey into the Sierra where water, rock and time have provided the backdrop and home for the birds we know and love.

Book Signing

We will have copies of Birds of the Sierra Nevada on sale at the event. Keith will be onsite and happy to sign copies of the book before or after the event.

This beautifully illustrated and user-friendly book presents the most up-to-date information available about the natural histories of birds of the Sierra Nevada, the origins of their names, the habitats they prefer, how they communicate and interact with one another, their relative abundance, and where they occur within the region. Each species account features original illustrations by Keith Hansen. In addition to characterizing individual species, Birds of the Sierra Nevada also describes ecological zones and bird habitats, recent trends in populations and ranges, conservation efforts, and more than 160 rare species. It also includes a glossary of terms, detailed maps, and an extensive bibliography with over 500 citations.
