Join us for a vibrant, free community event that brings environmental education to life through hands-on, place-based experiences for children and families in Point Reyes Station. The day features immersive activities, including a live “All About Owls” presentation with rescued bird ambassadors, a first-come, first-served guided family walk through local wetlands, and a wide range of interactive learning stations such as owl pellet dissections, watershed models, wildlife artifact exploration, migration games, zero-waste challenges, and culturally rooted art-making. Children participate in a bilingual “passport” activity, earning a “Planet Protector” goodie bag with tools to continue environmental stewardship at home.

At a time when environmental protections are increasingly under threat—and when children’s learning is increasingly mediated through screens—this event meets a critical and growing need for accessible, hands-on, real-world environmental education. Many youth, particularly in underserved communities, lack opportunities to directly engage with nature, scientific tools, and environmental experts in meaningful, tactile ways. This event intentionally provides screen-free, sensory-rich experiences that foster curiosity, deepen understanding, and build lasting emotional connections to the natural world—connections that are essential to developing lifelong environmental stewards.

Designed to be free, bilingual, and fully ADA-accessible, the program removes economic, cultural, and language barriers while creating a welcoming, intergenerational space where families, educators, artists, and conservation leaders come together. By centering children ages 3–16 and their caregivers, the event strengthens family and community bonds, fosters social cohesion, and builds a shared sense of belonging rooted in West Marin’s unique environmental and cultural landscape. It also elevates Indigenous knowledge, local expertise, and diverse community voices that are often underrepresented in environmental education.

Working in close partnership with a network of 10–15 local nonprofit organizations, educators, and cultural practitioners significantly enhances both the value and credibility of the program. Through collaboration with trusted community-based groups, the event is grounded in scientific expertise, cultural relevance, and place-based knowledge. These partners bring specialized skills and established community relationships, enriching the quality and authenticity of the experience while expanding outreach and inclusion. This collaborative model builds community trust and creates ongoing pathways for engagement, connecting families to organizations and resources they can continue to learn from and support beyond the event.
